We borrowed this book from our magnificent library, attracted mainly by the cover design, a really beautiful one:
Il racconto è stato scritto da Madonna, la cantante, che, come molti sapranno, ha scritto diversi libri per bambini di recente. Mai attratti dai best seller, e soprattutto quando di nomi famosi che nulla hanno a che vedere con la letteratura, non avevamo mai comprato nulla di scritto da lei. Ma in biblioteca ciò che ci ha colpito sono state appunto le illustrazioni: splendide, classicheggianti, dai colori soffici, delicati, molto dettagliate e molto curate. Abbiamo così deciso di portare a casa il libro e di leggerlo con calma.
The tale was written by Madonna, the pop singer, who, as many of you already know, has written some children's books recently. Never attracted to the best sellers, above all when they're written by celebrities who've nothing to do with literature, we had never bought any of her books. But in the library we were especially attracted by the magnificent illustrations: classical drawings in soft, delicate colours, very detailed and very refined. Therefore we decided to take the book home and to read it in the peace of our sitting room.
L'ho letto io ai bambini a voce alta, e devo dire che è loro piaciuto. E' certamente una storia classica, una fiaba ambientata nel Medio oriente di qualche tempo fa, con protagonista un bimbo orfano affidato dai genitori a un amico di famiglia per una volta non malvagio e approfittatore, bensì buono e saggio, che, oltre a insegnarli il mestiere di orafo, gli dona anche saggi insegnamenti di vita, che gli permetteranno di trasformare ogni cosa che gli accade, bella o brutta che sia, nella "migliore delle cose che potrebbe accaderti", ovvero che "tutto andrà per il meglio" se avrai delle certezze, se ne sarai convinto.
I read it aloud to my children and I must say they liked it. It certainly is a classical sotry: a tale set in the Near East, some centuries ago. The main character is an orphaned child whose parents, before dying, entrusted him to a family friend who, for once, is not a bad and malevolent one, but a good and wise old man. He teaches the child a job as a goldsmith and gives him also wise life lessons, that will allow him to transform everything that happens to him, good or bad, in "the best thing that could happen to you", or "that everything that happens is for the best" if you have certainties, if you trust it will go well.
La storia ha uno svolgimento classico: la richiesta del re, la disavventura, la risoluzione del problema in modo brillante e proficuo per i due, la punizione dei malvagi. Carina, ben scritta, nulla di particolarmente nuovo, ma con finissime illustrazioni della coppia russa Olga Dugina e Andrej Dugin, illustratori di libri e insegnanti di arte.
Ai bambini è piaciuta e devo dire che anche a me non è dispiaciuta, anche grazie ai disegni e ai colori che le donano vita e intensità maggiori.
The story, as mentioned above, follows a classical path: the request from the king, the bad adventures, the problem solution in a brilliant way for both child and old man, the punishment of the bad guys. A nice story, well written, nothing particularly new or innovative, but with very fine illustrations by the Russian couple Olga Dugina and Andrej Dugin, book illustrators and teachers of art.
The children liked it, and I must say that me, too, thanks also to the drawings and the colours, that give it more life and more intensity.
"The power of cenratinty is without limits. In life, there will be many tests you will have to face. You must hold on to the belief that everything that happens is for the best".
