Following from part 1!

Sabato mattina ci siamo alzati presto per fare colazione tranquillamente all'hotel (davvero notevole) e poi siamo partiti velocemente e abbiamo deciso di andare, per prima cosa, data l'esperienza di attesa del giorno prima, a Bard, nonostante il fatto che Bard si trovi più verso casa degli altri due castelli che avevamo in mente di visitare. Ma essendo Bard uno dei più famosi, abbiamo deciso di andarvi per prima cosa: gli altri due si trovano a circa  10-15 km a nord, verso Aosta, ma volevamo essere sicuri di comprare i biglietti e poi di decidere, nel caso l'attesa fosse molto lunga, di tornare a visitare uno o due degli altri castelli durante l'attesa.

On Saturday we got up quite early, in order to have a peaceful breakfast at the hotel (very good indeed) and then left quickly and decided to go first, given the queuing experience of the previous day, to Bard, in spite of the fact that it is more towards home than the other two castles we had in mind. But being one of the most famous ones, we decided to go there first: the other two were about 10-15 km nearer Aosta, but we wanted to buy tickets and eventually decide, while waiting, to go back and visit the other two or one of the two while waiting.

E a Bard abbiamo avuto una vera sorpresa: tutte le mostre e i musei al forte di Bard, molti e diversissimi fra loro, aprono alle 11 del mattino, con solo un paio che aprono alle 10!!
Perciò abbiamo comprato i biglietti, eravamo i primi della coda, ma abbiamo comunque dovuto aspettare: prima che aprisse la biglietteria (alle 10) e poi l'apertura del museo (alle 11 a.m.)!!
La prima attesa è stata un po' noiosa perchè abbiamo dovuto rimanere lì e aspettare, per evitare di perdere  la possibilità di entrare al primo orario disponibile se fossero arrivati molti visitatori...ma la seconda attesa è stata piacevole: abbiamo acquistato i biglietti (la biglietteria è in cima alla fortezza, nell'ultima parte del forte sulla cime dello sperone roccioso) e poi siamo scesi lentamente verso il livello al quale si trova il museo che avevamo deciso di visitare. E, così facendo, abbiamo potuto ammirare il meraviglioso panorama e leggere tutti i cartelli informativi sulle varie parti e funzioni del forte.

We had a real surprise: Bard Fortress exhibits and museums, many different ones, all open at 11 a.m., apart from a couple opening at 10 a.m.!!!
So we got the tickets, we were the first in line, but we had to wait first for the opening of the ticket office (10 a.m.) and then for the opening of the museum! (11 a.m.). the first part of waiting was a bit boring, because we had to stay there and wait, just in case too many people arrived and we lost the tour...but the second part was nice: we bought the tickets (the ticket office is on top, the last piece of the fortress on top of the rock) and then slowly descended to get to the level where the museum we wanted to see was. And doing so we could admire the entire panorama, which is marvellous, and read the signposts about the history and functions of the fortress.

Come si vede dal collage di foto, ci sono tre ascensori panoramici come quello rosso e cristallo, e uno verticale che portano alla parte più elevata della fortezza, se non si desidera camminare in salita a lungo.
Una volta arrivati su, si possono o comprare i biglietti per le varie mostre, oppure camminare in discesa.
La fortezza  è del 19° secolo, epoca in cui fu ricostruita sulle rovine di precedenti fortificazioni, per prevenire un eventuale invasione francese dalle Alpi valdostane. E' in posizione strategica che all'epoca dominava la sola strada di comunicazione della valle e con vari livelli di artiglieria.
Come ho scritto prima, abbiamo camminato in discesa per raggiungere il livello dove si trova il museo che desideravamo visitare: "Le Alpi dei ragazzi": un'esperienza di arrampicata sul Monte Bianco fino alla vetta, dove imparano cose utili da sapere in montagna, anche se non scaleranno mai il Monte Bianco: come riconoscere le nuvole "buone", che cosa può scatenare slavine, ecc.
 

As you can see from the collage of photos, there are three panoramic lifts (the red and crystal one) and one vertical lift taking you to the upper site, if you don't wish to walk all the way uphill. Once you get there you can either buy tickets for the various exhibits, or walk downhill.
The fortress dates back to the XIX Century, when it was rebuilt on the ruins of previous ones, to prevent the French from coming to Italy through the Alps. It is on a strategic rock that at the time dominated the only way of access to the valley, and with various levels of artillery.
As I mentioned before, we walked downhill to get to the level where the museum "The Children's Alps Museum" is: an experience of climbing to the top of the Mont Blanc for children. There they learn something, lead by a yeti and through interactive monitors, that can be useful even if they don't climb the Mont Blanc, but if they simply walk in the mountains: how to recognize good clouds, what types of events can cause an avalanche, etc.


Ci vuole circa un'ora per completare il percorso. Abbiamo poi deciso di non visitare altre mostre a Bard (sono in prevalenza mostre fotografiche, che, sebbene molto interessanti per noi, avrebbero potuto essere più noiose per i bimbi, specialmente se stanchi), siamo scesi al borgo medievale di bard e ci abbiamo fatto una bella passeggiata

It takes about one hour to complete the visit.
We chose not to visit any other (they're mainly photography exhibits, although very interesting for us, maybe a bit boring for the children, especially if they're tired), we got down to the medieval center of Bard, walked through it 

e poi ci siamo diretti a nord verso Verrés

and then headed north towards Verrés.

A Verrés ci siamo fermati per un pranzo veloce e poi ci siamo inerpicati fino al forte. Che è diverso, molto diverso dal Castello di Fénis, nonostante sia stato costruito dalla famiglia Challans come l'altro: è realmente una fortezza difensiva, con muri perimetrali di uno spessore di 2,6 metri, circa il doppio dei normali muri difenzivi dell'epoca. Per raggiungerlo abbiamo attraversato un ponte che oggi è di pietra e fisso, una volta era levatoio. Ma non ci è sfuggito il piccolo ponte levatoio pedonale laterale: abbiamo chiesto lumi e ci è stato detto che è un ponte originale del 16° secolo!


There we stopped for a quick lunch and then climbed up to the Fort.
Which is different, in spite of being a Challans family fort, from the castle in Fenis: it's really a defensive building, with perimeter walls as thick as 2,60mt.!
We crossed the now stone bridge that used to be a drawbridge, and we didn't miss the fact that there is a tiny pedestrian drawbridge to the left: we asked and were told that it's an original drawbridge dating back to the XVI century! 

Anche qui abbiamo dovuto aspettare un pochino per poter entrare, sempre perchè le visite sono solo guidate e per piccoli gruppi. La guida era molto competente ma non così amichevole e disponibile con i bambini come quella di Fénis, perciò la visita è stata complessivamente meno "divertente". Di Verrés si conosce molto poco: gli archivi della famiglia Challans devono essere andati parzialmente distrutti, perchè i nomi dei progettisti e degli esecutori dei lavori non sono conosciuti e la sua storia è praticamente scomparsa. Anche questo forte fu abbandonato per un paio di secoli, ma, essendo molto difficile da raggiungere, su un costone roccioso, ed essendo le condizioni di vita al suo interno molto dure, a causa dellì'umidità e del freddo dovuti anche allo spessore dei muri, e al fatto di essere costruito su pura roccia, della quale se ne vede affiorare una parte nel pavimento della sala da pranzo dell'esercito al pian terreno, nessuno lo occupò con bestiame e fieno. Perciò il tetto collassò e anche parte dei pavimenti dei piani superiori.

We had to wait a little bit also there, always because the tours are only guided ones and in small groups. The guide was very competent but not as friendly as the ones in Fénis, I must say. 
About Verrés very little is known: the archives must have been partially destroyed, because the names of those who designed it and built it and its history have disappeared. It was as well abandoned for a couple of centuries, but being very difficult to reach, on a spur of a very high rock, and very harsh to live in, being very humid and cold, due to the thickness of the walls and to the fact of being built on pure rock, of which one can see a part surfacing from the floor in the army living room on the ground floor., nobody got hold of it for cattle or hay.
Therefore the roof collapsed and part of the upper levels floors, too.

Anche questo forte fu oggetto di restauri negli anni Trenta e mantiene la struttura originale e le favolose scale interne sono tutte originali e non sono mai state ritoccate. C'è un'enorme cisterna per la riserva d'acqua al centro del cortile interno (che è scoperto come a Fénis) e, non avendo il forte fondamenta o cantine, uno dei suoi misteri è da dove defluisca l'acqua in eccesso. Perfino durante le fortissime piogge che causarono gravi inondazioni del 2000 (le inondazioni naturalmente non interessarono il forte, data la sua posizione), il forte non ebbe alcun problema a smaltire l'acqua che sicuramente aveva riempito eccessivamente la cisterna: la si vedeva defluire da un lato del forte senza che al suo interno vi fosse traccia di allagamento: il pozzo deve aver avuto un sistema di incanalamento dell'acqua verso l'esterno del forte, sistema di cui non si sa nulla.


It was again restored in the Thirties and keeps its original structure and the fabulous stairs inside are original and never touched. There's a massive water cistern in the middle of the courtyard and, the fort not having any foundations or cellars, it's still a mystery what is the way the water goes through when there is too much in the well. During the 2000 terrible rainfalls and the following flooding (the last of course didn't interest the fort due to its position), the fort had no problem whatsoever with excessive water: the well must have a system of channeling the water outside the fort, where water could be seen flowing out).


Inoltre, al primo piano i bambini saranno sorpresi allo scoprire che gli appartamenti privati dei signori del castello avevano ben due, sì, due, bagni privati!!! già nel 13° secolo! E la cucina aveva 3 enormi, davvero enormi, camini, e un doppio forno a muro: 4 armadi a mjuro con spessi sportelli di legno collocati fra due camini e destinati a scaldare le vivande (e questo era un sistema tipico dei paesi del nord, il che dimostra che dovevano avere qualcuno che arrivava da paesi nordici fra i progettisti del castello). Mentre nella cucina dei soldati al piano inferiore c'è una nicchia nel muro trasformata in quello che sembra essere un antenato del frigorifero. Molte altre piccole sorprese terranno alta l'attenzione dei bimbi.

Plus, on the first floor the children will be surprised by the fact that the private apartments of the lords of the castle had two, yes, I said two, private toilets!!! Already in the XIII Century! And the kitchen had 3 huge, really huge, fireplaces and a wall-double-oven system: 4 wall cabinets with a thick wooden door that served as an ancient microwave oven to heat food! (and this was typical of northern Europe, which shows that they must have had someone coming from northern countries while designing the castle). While in the army's kitchen on the lower level there's a wall niche transformed in what seems to be the ancestor of the fridge.
And many other little surprises that will keep children's attention awake.

Al termine della visita abbiamo percorso la discesa verso la nostra auto e abbiamo dovuto decidere: visitare un altro castello, a Issogne, o andare a casa? Uno dei due elfi ha votato per il castello di Issogne, l'altro era troppo stanco e avrebbe preferito tornare a casa. Abbiamo infine deciso di evitare il terzo castello del giorno perchè era davvero troppo stanco e ci siamo solo fermati in un vicino negozio ad Arnad per comprare il locale e famoso lardo di Arnad, non dimenticatevi edi provarlo! Lo abbiamo comprato e siamo ripartiti per tornare a casa in vista della nostra cena a base di crepes.
E una buona notte dopo un paio di giorni meravigliosi trascorsi in Valle d'Aosta.

When we finished the visit, we walked downhill and had to decide: shall we visit the near Issogne Castle or shall we go home? One of the elves voted for the castle, the other was too tired. We decided to avoid the third castle in the day, because he was really tired and stopped at a nearby shop in Arnad to buy the local and famous lardo di Arnad (don't forget to try it!) and took it back home for our evening dinner based on Crepes!
And good night after a wonderful and intense couple of days out!
