Luoghi magici con i bambini: Villa Litta Borromeo /Magic Places with children: Villa Litta Borromeo

Un altro luogo incantato e incantevole da visitare, lo è per tutti, ma in particolare la magia coinvolge i bambini. Specialmente se non raccontate loro che cosa li attende e, soprattutto, se poi li lasciate davvero fare....altrimenti gli rovinate metà del divertimento!

Siamo stati di recente a visitare Villa Litta Borromeo a Lainate (MI), a pochi km dal centro città di Milano, un'oasi di pace e di benessere psicofisico: immersa nel verde del suo parco (anche se, a onor del vero, deturpato dalla vicinanza di assurdi caseggiati visibili anche dall'interno del parco e resi possibili negli anni Settanta, quando già la villa era passata in proprietà del Comune, da permessi scellerati del Comune stesso). Il parco comprende alberi secolari (56 specie diverse, per ora...in diminuzione perché vengono periodicamente tagliati per ordine della Forestale e mai rimpiazzati con la scusa che la crescita sarebbe comunque molto lenta, un vero peccato e un vero disastro dal punto di vista storico architettonico, paesaggistico e naturalistico) e un magnifico Ninfeo, il cuore della visita con i bambini.

We've recently been to Villa Litta Borromeo in Lainate (MI), only a few km far from the town centre of Milan, an oasis of peace an psychological and physical well being: in the middle of its green park (even if, to tell the truth, spoiled by some horrible nearby buildings visible from inside the park and made possible in the Seventies, when the Villa and the park had already become part of the properties of the town, by mindless permits given by the town itself. The park has centuries old trees (56 different species, so far...diminishing because they're periodically cut by ordnance of the Forest Police and never replaced giving as an excuse that the growth would anyway be very slow: a real pity and a real disaster from an architectural-historical, landscaping and naturalistic points of view) and a magnificent Nymphaeum, the heart of the visit with children.

In realtà abbiamo visitato solo il Ninfeo e il giardino, perché era una giornata troppo calda per permetterci di visitare tutto, tenuto conto dell'età dei bambini e del fatto che il piccolo si sarebbe stancato presto. Torneremo per visitare la villa (che, in ogni caso, ha un biglietto e un prezzo separati) e le sue sale, ne vale senz'altro la pena.
Come consiglio spassionato, vi suggerisco di andare a visitare il Ninfeo in estate quando si può godere appieno delle...sorprese che attendono tutti, specialmente i bimbi. Vi si accede solo tramite visita guidata, ci si presenta alla biglietteria, si acquista il biglietto e si attende la partenza di una guida, non c'è un orario prefissato, partono quando c'è un gruppetto di persone pronto a entrare.

As a matter of fact, we visited only the Nympaeum and the garden, because it was too hot to visit all of the Villa and the rest, keeping in mind the age of the children and the fact that the small elf would soon get tired. We'll be back and visit the Villa (which anyway has a separate entrance fee and ticket) and its rooms, it's for sure worth it.
A good piece of advice is to go and visit the Nymphaeum in summer, when it's possible to enjoy fully the...surprises that await everybody and especially the children. It's as simple as that: you get to the ticket office, buy your tickets and then wait for the first guided tour to start. There are not timetables for guided visits: they just wait to have enough people to start the tour.

La villa è cinquecentesca, voluta da Pirro I Visconti Borromeo, ricchissimo e colto uomo rinascimentale milanese, che elesse la zona a luogo di villeggiatura estiva, facendovi edificare la grande villa, volta nord-sud: a Sud l'ingresso e il corpo principale della villa stessa, sull'asse verso nord il Ninfeo, una grande fontana e infine, a Nord, l'esedra.

The Renaissance Villa was built towards the end of the 16th Century, by order of Pirro I Visconti Borromeo, a very very rich and learnt renaissance man from Milan, who decided for the area to be his family's summer holiday resort, having the Villa built there, guarding the North-South axis: on the South the entrance and the main building, towards North the Nympaeum, a large fountain after it and, at the North end, an exhedra.

Il Ninfeo era originariamente in mattoni a vista, solo in seguito fu rimaneggiato e ricoperto fino ad avere l'aspetto attuale con stalattiti, stalagmiti e pietre portate dalle montagne carsiche della Valtellina, di proprietà della stessa famiglia.

Fu progettato e seguito nella costruzione fin nei minimi dettagli da Martino Bassi, l'allora architetto della Fabbrica del Duomo, e vennero ideate ingegnose soluzioni di ingegneria idraulica per alimentare il "luogo di frescura".

The Nympaheum was originally in bricks, only later it was modified and covered to have the nowadays look with stalactites, stalagmites and stones brought from the Karst mountains of the Valtelline valley, property of the same family.
It was designed and followed personally during its building by Martino Bassi, who was the Master Architect at the Fabbrica del Duomo, the continuous building operations of the Duomo in Milan, and he designed and invented ingenuous hydraulic engineering solutions to feed the "refreshment place".

Il Ninfeo accoglie già con una prima sorpresa: un piccolo monumento prima del suo ingresso si rivela essere un automa che spruzza a varie riprese e a sorpresa acqua sugli astanti. I quali spesso si sedevano su un sedile ombreggiato, solo per essere sorpresi da schizzi d'acqua direttamente dallo schienale del sedile stesso...(visibile nella foto sopra sotto l'immenso albero)

The Nympaheum welcomes the visitor with a first surprise already before its entrance: a tiny monument reveals itself as being, instead, an automaton spraying from time to time and from various positions people with water. People who, often, to get some refreshment in the shade, sat on a stone bench at the bottom of the very large tree seen in the picture above, only to find themselves really refreshed from water sparying directly from the back of the bench.

L'ingresso è un po' difficile per chi non vuole bagnarsi....ma il bello è proprio bagnarsi!

The entrance is sort of difficult for those not wishing to be wet...

E, come potete vedere dalle immagini, qui inizia la bellissima visita dell'interno del Ninfeo e la sua storia: i pavimenti, e le pareti, sono tutti fatti a mosaico: mosaici di sassi di fiume di colori diversi, non di tesserine fatte e tagliate ad hoc, e applicate alle pareti dopo che l'architetto aveva disegnato su di esse, con una tecnica ingegnosa per la simmetria, i bozzetti dei disegni finali: disewgnava su cartoni grandi il bozzetto, traforava il cartone e vi picchiettava sopra il nero, in una sorta di antenato dello stencil, per riprodurre il disegno sulla parete. Per ottenere la simmetria bastava capovolgere il cartone, o a testa in giù, diciamo così, o davanti di dietro...geniale. In alcuni punti, dato che la villa e il giardino sono stati lasciati decadere per moltissimi anni fino agli anni settanta-ottanta, il mosaico non esiste più e così sono visibili i bozzetti.

As you can see from the pictures, here starts the absolutely interesting visit to the inner part of the Nymphaeum and its history: the floors and the walls are all covered in mosaic. These mosaics aren't made in the classical way with little square pieces prepared ad hoc, but they're made of river stones that have been glued to the walls and floor after the architect had drawn the final picture on them, using a very intelligent technique, especially for symmetry reasons. He had, at first, drawn the picture on large card boards, then punctured them, and let the black flow from the little holes on to the wall, in a sort of an ancient stenciling technique. For symmetry, he just needed to turn the cardboard upside down or from one side to the other...a genius! The drawings are visible in some areas due to the fact that until the Seventies-Eighties the villa and its garden were left to themselves and decayed a lot, therefore in some spots the mosaic doesn't exist anymore.

Naturalmente ognuna delle cose ritratte è un simbolo e ha un proprio significato. Molte delle sale del Ninfeo veniva utilizzate per esporre l'immensa e ricchissima collezione di opere d'arte della famiglia, perciò non vi erano giochi d'acqua, e non solo: anche per dare tregua agli ospiti che, altrimenti, anzichè piacevolmente sorpresi e divertiti, alla fine sarebbero stati irritati.

Of course each one of the portrayed things is a symbol and has a specific meaning... Many of the Nymphaeum rooms were used to host the very large and very rich art collection of the family, therefore there were no water games, but not only for that: it was also to let the guests take a breath from the refreshemnt, otherwise at the end of the tour they wouldn't be pleasantly refreshed and amused, but too wet and irritated.

Segue una specie di grotta dal soffitto molto luminoso, soleggiato: contiene la riproduzione di un mulino (un segno di ringraziamento da parte di una famiglia che acquisì la villa due secoli dopo la sua costruzione e le cui fortune dipendevano dall'industria molitrice), una gallina e altri simboli, oltre a quelli riprodotti nei mosaici.

There follows a very special room with a sunny ceiling, a sort of a grotto, containing the reproducxtion of a mill (a sign of thanks by a later owner of the villa whose fortunes depended on the milling industry), a hen and a few other symbols, apart from those in the mosaics.

La gallina era il simbolo della ricchezza della famiglia e l'unica spiegazione che il padrone di casa dava agli ospiti delle proprie fortune: possedevano la gallina dalle uova d'oro, che a ogni passaggio produceva tre uova d'oro, fra lo stupore e il successivo rinfresco ad acqua degli ospiti.

The hen was the symbol of the family fortunes and the only explanation thet the landlord gave to his guests about the provenance of his wealth: they owned a gold-eggs-hen, that whenever they went by lay three gold eggs, amid the astonishment and the following water refreshment of the guests.

Dopo un paio di altre stanze meravigliosamente decorate in mosaico, si arriva a una sorta di corte centrale, nella quale numerose statue osservano i vistatori e in cui li attendono diversi giochi d'acqua nascosti in svariati punti... per la gioia dei bambini, come si vede qui sotto!

After a couple more rooms, all gorgeously decorated in mosaics, one comes to the central point of the Nymphaeum, where a collection of statues observes the guest, and where a number of water games is hidden in various spots...for the special joy of children, as you can see!

Dopo questa corte interna, numerose stanze dedicate all'allora enorme collezione d'arte della famiglia Litta Borromeo, collezione oggi dispersa o visibile in vari musei con poche eccezioni, come una statua che fu danneggiata durante scavi di risistemazione del parco quando la villa fu finalmente restaurata, perchè era stata sepolta nel parco dai tedeschi in ritirata dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, nella speranza di ritornare e portarsela via, cosa che, evidentemente e fortunatamente, non fu possibile.

Following this a number of rooms dedicated to the artistic collection of the Litta Borromeo family, now dispersed or in various museums, leaving a few exceptions, like a statue that was ruined when the villa was finally restored and the statue emerged from excavation in the garden (it had been buried there by Germans withdrawing after World War II came to an end, in the hope that they could come back and take them away, but eventually never managed to do so).

Si giunge così a un cortiletto molto speciale, con un altro automa dotato di specchietti che riflettevano le fiamme delle fiaccole nelle visite serali e numerosissimi e dispettosissimi giochi d'acqua, che, fra le altre cose, consentono la formazione di un arcobaleno alla luce del sole:

Through these rooms we get to a very tiny and special courtyard, with another automaton, having a number of tiny mirrors mirroring and projecting eventual evening flames and lights, and many and tricky water games that, among other things, create a rainbow in the sunlight:

Provate a immaginare quante volte si sono seduti e rialzati su quei sedili di pietra che invitavano a riposarsi dopo una lunga visita e invece...procuravano un grande refrigerio!
Alcuni degli scherzi d'acqua qui sono particolarmente nascosti e insidiosi...di sicuro non ne uscirete asciutti!

Imagine how many times they sat down and got up from those seats that invited to sit and relax after a long visit and...gave a lot of refreshment instead!

Some of the ater games are really tricky and hidden here...you won't get away dry, that's for sure!

La visita prosegue verso l'area dedicata veramente alle Ninfe: una specie di grotta magnifica con altri giochi d'acqua e con un lungo corridoio alle spalle della Ninfa centrale, corridoio che dava ospitalità a grandi poeti e musicisti per intrattenere nei giorni di particolare calura i padroni di casa e i loro ospiti in un'area veramente molto fresca rispetto all'esterno.

The visit follows the rooms towards the area really dedicated to the Nymphs: a sort of a magnificent cave with other water games and a very long corridor behind the central Nymph, a corridor that hosted great poets and musicians that entertained during very hot days the landlords and their guests in a particularly cool area, if compared to the exterior.

Non vi racconterò tutte le storie accadute in questo corridoio, così come nel ninfeo, dovute ai più disparati usi a cui fu sottoposta la villa e i suoi possedimenti nei secoli, specialmente più recenti e durante e dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, li scoprirete da soli andandola a visitare.

I won't tell you about all the stories in this corridor, following the most diverse uses that were made in the centuries, especially recent, of the villa and its belongings, and especially during and after WWII, you'll discover them by yourselves going and visiting it.

Lasciando il ninfeo si esce alla luce del sole e ci si ritrova nel meraviglioso giardino, con la grandissima fontana centrale, dedicata a una delle mogli dei vari proprietari che si sono succeduti nel tempo dall'amore di suo marito:
Leaving the Nymphaeum behind, you get in the sun again, in the marvelous garden, with the large fountain dedicated to one of the wives of the ancient landlords by her husband:

E, dietro la fontana, alla fine del giardino, l'esedra.

And, behind the fountain, at the end of the garden, the exhedra.


Invitandovi ad andare a visitare le villa (che è chiusa ora, ma apre con un'apertura straordinaria il 15 agosto e riaprirà con una rivocazione storica in costume il weekend del 7-8 settembre), sia perchè è splendida, sia perchè i bambini la apprezzeranno moltissimo, sia perchè è interamente gestita da volontari e il ricavato delle visite va per i restauri di cui ha continuamente bisogno, visto lo stato in cui era stata lasciata decadere (e con la crisi hanno visto diminuire di molto le visite...), vi svelo un segreto, gli altri li scoprirete lì: i meccanismi dei giochi d'acqua sono ancora oggi azionati manualmente da volontari rinchiusi in anguste stanzette segrete, invisibili agli ospiti, al passaggio delgi ospiti stessi. Provate con i bambini a fare una caccia al tesoro e a trovarne qualcuno! Ma attenti! Se vi vedono sbiricare, vi innaffiano da giochi d'acqua che ancora non avevate visto funzionare.... :D

Inviting everybody to go and visit the villa (which is now closed, but will open on an extraordinary opening on August 15 and will open again with a historical parade on Sept. 7-8), because its marvelous, because the kids will very much appreciate it and have fun, because its entirely managed (the visits I mean) by volunteers and the returns of the visits all go to the restoration that it always needs, given the state in which it had been left to decay (and with the crisis they had very few visits...), I'll reveal one secret (the others you'll find out when you go and visit it): the water games are still manually opened and closed by hidden volunteers closed in very narrow secret rooms, invisible to the visitors, when visitors pass by. Try with children a sort of a treasure hunt and find some of them! But be careful! If they notice you're watching them, they may operate some of the water sprouts you hadn't yet seen working...and water you entirely! :D
